“India Are the Favorites Against Australia”: Mohammed Shami Eyes Test Comeback Through Ranji Trophy After Ankle Surgery

India’s premier pacer Mohammed Shami is focused on achieving full fitness following his ankle surgery, with a possible return to domestic cricket on the horizon. Shami, who last played in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, has been sidelined by injury but remains determined to come back stronger.

Speaking at the Cricket Association of Bengal’s (CAB) annual awards ceremony, where he was honored for his outstanding contributions, Shami emphasized the importance of being fully fit before stepping back onto the international stage.

“I’m working hard to return soon because I know it’s been a long time since I last played for the team. But I want to make sure there’s no discomfort when I return. Fitness is key for me, and I don’t want to rush and risk another injury,” Shami told reporters. “The stronger I come back, the better it will be. I’ve already started bowling, but I won’t take any chances until I’m 100% ready.”

Shami, who is undergoing rehabilitation, is likely to feature in Bengal’s Ranji Trophy matches in October, facing Uttar Pradesh on October 11 and Bihar on October 18. His domestic appearances will serve as a fitness test before a potential return to the international fold, including a possible inclusion in the Test series against New Zealand later this year.

As India prepares for the highly anticipated five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, Shami remains confident in the team’s strength. “We are the favorites; they should be the ones worried,” he quipped.
