IPL 2025: MS Dhoni set to be listed as ‘uncapped player’ as league announces host of rule changes ahead of auction

Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time IPL champions, might have the option to retain their former captain and icon, MS Dhoni, as an uncapped player in future IPL seasons. This comes after the IPL’s decision to reinstate a rule from 2008, allowing Indian players who have retired from international cricket for at least five years to enter the auction as uncapped players. The rule, scrapped in 2021, has been revived in a recent announcement.

According to the IPL’s official statement, “An Indian player who has not played in the starting XI of international cricket and does not hold a BCCI central contract for five consecutive years will be considered uncapped.” This rule applies only to Indian players.

Dhoni, who turned 43 in July and last played an international match at the 2019 ODI World Cup, was retained by CSK for ₹12 crore ahead of the 2022 mega auction. If CSK opts to retain him under the new rule, they could secure his services for as low as ₹4 crore.

Speculation about Dhoni’s future in the IPL has been swirling for a few seasons. After undergoing knee surgery in 2023, Dhoni passed on the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad before IPL 2024, playing a more limited role as a late-order boundary hitter. Recently, Dhoni hinted that both he and CSK are waiting for the finalised player retention rules before making any decisions about his future.
